allons-yrosie:

This song literally makes me cry every time I hear it or at least tear up.

I’ve actually been doing a lot of thinking about Disney and how the princesses and their stories shape us when we’re little girls. I think that the Princesses we become obsessed with when we’re young have a little bit of us in them or vice versa.

For example, I’ve always identified with Belle even when I was 5 years old and saw Beauty and the Beast for the first time.  My Mom always tells the story of me seeing Beauty and the Beast for the first time and pointing at the screen with the most serious look on my face and saying “Mommy, that’s me.”  Everyone laughs at that story but I still do identify with Belle.

Growing up, I was always the strange girl who read books and sang and was weird which is just another testament to my inadvertent Belle-ness. My friend loved Aurora (Sleeping Beauty) and she’s found her prince. He’s everything she’s ever dreamed of.  I’m nothing but happy for her and I’m not just saying that. They’re so good for and to each other it’s ridiculous.

What I’m trying to say is some girls dream their prince will come and he does but other girls have to be with the Gastons first.  Then if they’re lucky they meet a Beast.  He may not be who she wants him to be but in the end they’re perfect for each other which is what I love the most about the story.

I know I’ve been rambling but I just had to say this. I just want to get across that if you really look at it, the little girl in us never leaves.  She’s always there in a too big ball gown and tiara in our heads telling us to dream and never let go of those dreams.

Don’t forget your little girl.
